Broken Things Collective
with ann haeyoung
Participatory events, performances and publications

The collective, formed by ann haeyong and Nupur Mathur is a multi-faceted ongoing project that considers repair to be a creative, social and political act. The artists foster conversation around the systems that favor disposability, convenience, and consumption and what it might look like to refuse them.

By organizing events the artists create space for people to share knowledge about repair. They started the events as a way to not only learn how to repair objects but also to bring people together to combat social isolation and our feelings of alienation from the products we use daily.

Outside of the events the artist think critically about brokenness and repair through researching materials, systems, ecologies, culture and history. Most recently this has taken on the form of participatory performances that examine the materials that everyday objects are made of. In these performances participants are given research dossiers to take on characters (people, places, concepts) that have encountered or have a relationship to the material being investigated.
